SW Student Resources 2013

Projects both by and for student journalists were a highlight of 2013. The following were available to participants in 2013.

splc1One of the biggest student projects was led by the Student Press Law Center, which coordinated a nationwide student audit of campus crime records to gauge compliance with the Clery Act. As SPLC told it:

Over two weeks in February, we’re asking students to stop by their school’s police or security department and ask to see documents that, by law, they’re entitled to see. Then, come Sunshine Week (March 10-16), we’re asking students to write about their experiences.

For more information on how to participate in 2014, go to the SPLC website.

nynpa-nieThe New York News Publishers Association created a special Newspaper In Education materials for Sunshine Week that it made available to all participants.

Included were a series of graphic organizers to encourage young people to examine open government issues, and a “Make an App for That” exercise that encourages them to think about how they would apply a mobile application to government data.
